Math in the News: Exponential Growth

Exponential growth refers to when a quantity increases by the same percent from one time period to the next.  In certain instances, exponential growth can be very negative,  such as in the case of bacteria growth.  However, in the business world it is quite impressive when a company or industry is experiencing exponential growth.

Check out this article featured in the Chicago Tribune about a video on demand company in South America that is experiencing tremendous success.  The article claims that video on demand services in South America have the potential to experience exponential growth.

Do you agree with the article’s statement of VOD’s potential to experience exponential growth based on the numbers mentioned in the article, or do you think this is an exaggeration?
