Math in the News: Fibonacci Sequence

It’s time for another edition of Math in the News.  This week’s post relates to the Fibonacci sequence of numbers.

The Fibonacci sequence is a sequence of numbers starting with zero and one, where each subsequent number is the sum of the previous two numbers.

Check out this article, “Tampa’s ‘Beer Can’ Remodeled, Ready For a New Chapter,” from the Tampa Bay Times about a building in Florida that was constructed using the Fibonacci sequence.  Each window pane and floor tile in the building get progressively bigger based on the Fibonacci sequence.

Can you think of somewhere that you may have seen a Fibonacci sequence either in nature or as part of a design element?

  1. I am making a quilt based on the fibonacci sequence and found your blog. That building in Florida is great!

    • Hi Georgina – Thanks for your comment! A Fibonacci sequence quilt sounds amazing! I’d love to see a picture when it is finished. Good luck!
